Does Your Web site Have a Purpose?
You don’t buy advertising, design a brochure or develop a brand identity without a purpose, do you? Then why would you develop your Web site without a specific objective?
Here are 4 typical objectives that you should consider when developing or updating your Web site.
1. E-commerce
Sell directly on-line. E-commerce sites sell your service, collect the order, often deliver the product directly on-line and deposit the "ching ching" directly into your bank account. If you have a product that you can sell directly on the Net, then e-commerce is something you need to explore.
2. Lead Generation
Sell indirectly on-line. Provide your clients with the right information that leads to a ‘call to action’, which typically ends up with your customers contacting you directly via phone, e-mail, in fax or in person. In short, you are creating a reason for customers to contact you directly, or you are opening the door for an easier sell (if you are taking the initiative by contacting them).
3. Content
Research shows that most Web surfers are looking for INFORMATION. Help develop your brand’s credibility by supplying great content. If you are selling advertising space on your website you'll want people to stay on your website for a while. Great content typically keeps readers engaged and on your site longer. "Average time on site" is often regarded by web marketer's as the "most valuable player" of web stats.
4. Self-service
Save money by providing content, services and resources on-line. Your Web site is sitting there, 24/7, just waiting to be a service vehicle for your customers. When surfers visit your Web site to download files/programs or access applications and forms, they aren’t taking up your customer service staff time. Allowing customers to serve themselves on-line can be a great convenience for them and save your enterprise money at the same time. What a cool use of the Internet!
When you are planning your next Web site ask yourself this question... what’s the purpose of my Web site?
